Shoe Information

Running shoes are built specifically for the repetitive, forward motion of running. They're designed with more cushioning and shock absorption to handle the impact of running and lighter materials to reduce fatigue over distance. Regular sneakers or lifestyle shoes prioritize style and everyday comfort but usually lack the technology, support and cushioning needed for sustained running, which can increase your risk of discomfort or injury over time.

A good running shoe should feel snug through the midfoot and heel, with no slipping, but have about a thumb's width (around ½ or 0.5 size) of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. This extra room matters because feet swell during a run and swing slightly forward with every stride, especially on downhills or long distances. That's why many runners size up half a size from their everyday shoe size when buying running shoes.

This depends on how much your foot rolls inward (pronates) as you run.

  • Neutral shoes - These shoes are built for runners whose stride doesn't deviate much from their natural motion path which requires cushioning, not correction.
  • Stability/support shoes - Brooks labels these "GTS," short for Go-To-Support which are built for runners whose stride shows more inward roll or excess movement. They include extra structure, provided by Brooks' GuideRails® support, that gently guides the knee back into its natural motion path.

The easiest way is a gait analysis done at a run specialty shop (like Runnr - Bonifacio High Street), which looks at how your foot and leg move as you run. If that's not accessible, you may try an informal cue which is to check the wear pattern on the soles of your old shoes (even wear suggests neutral, heavy wear on the inner edge suggests overpronation, heavy wear on the outer edge suggests underpronation/supination). This is a helpful starting point, but a proper in-store or professional gait check is far more accurate.

A gait analysis looks at how your foot strikes the ground and how your leg moves as you run, usually done by watching you walk or run. It helps identify things like your pronation pattern, arch type, and stride tendencies, which then inform what kind of shoe (neutral vs. support, cushioning level, etc.) is likely to suit you best. It's not strictly required — plenty of runners do fine with a well-fitted neutral shoe — but it's useful if you're new to running, coming back from an injury, or have never had one done before, since it takes the guesswork out of choosing the right shoe for you.

Road shoes are built for pavement and hard, even surfaces. These shoes typically have moderate-to-plush cushioning for everyday miles.

Trail shoes are built for uneven, unpredictable and technical terrain. These shoes typically have more aggressive, grippier outsoles for traction on dirt, rocks, or mud, plus added protection like rock plates or reinforced toe caps.

Racing shoes are built to be as light and fast as possible, often with a firmer, more propulsive midsole (usually with a carbon or nylon plate) and a lower cushioning stack, trading some comfort and durability for speed.

Stack height is simply how much cushioning material sits between your foot and the ground. A higher stack means more cushioning underfoot.

Drop (or heel-to-toe offset) is the difference in height between the heel and the forefoot of the shoe, usually measured in millimeters.

Drop Classification Drop Height
High 10–12mm
Moderate 6–8mm
Low 0–4mm

A daily trainer is built for everyday, high-mileage use typically having more cushioning, more durable outsole rubber, and a balanced ride that can handle easy runs, long runs, and general training without breaking down quickly.

A race-day shoe is built to be lighter and more responsive, often at the cost of durability and plushness, since it's meant for faster efforts rather than logging weekly mileage. Most runners keep at least one of each in rotation.

Watch for the cushioning feeling flatter or less responsive than when the shoes were new, visible wear on the outsole tread (especially uneven wearing on one side), the upper feeling stretched out or loose, or new aches in your feet, shins, or knees after runs that weren't there before. Cushioning foam breaks down with mileage even if the shoe still looks fine on the outside, so don't rely on visual wear alone.

If you have flat feet (low arches), your foot tends to roll inward more, so a stability or support shoe with structured guidance, like Brooks' GuideRails shoes, is often a good fit. If you have high arches, your foot tends to roll outward and absorb less shock naturally, so a well-cushioned neutral shoe is usually recommended to compensate. In both cases, a proper gait analysis is the most reliable way to confirm what your feet actually need.

Best Shoe Fit

The Ghost is generally the go-to recommendation for new runners. It's a well-cushioned, neutral daily trainer that's comfortable and forgiving without being overly specialized, making it a solid all-around choice while you're still learning your stride and preferences. If a gait check shows you need extra support, the Adrenaline GTS is an equally beginner-friendly starting point.

The Ghost and Glycerin are both popular choices for marathon training thanks to their comfortable, durable cushioning built to handle high weekly mileage. Runners who need extra support during long training blocks often turn to the Adrenaline GTS. For race day itself, many marathoners switch into a lighter shoe from the Hyperion line.

Any shoe carrying the GTS (Go-To-Support) label is built with Brooks' GuideRails® support system. The Adrenaline GTS is the most popular choice, with the Glycerin GTS offering the same support in a softer, more cushioned package.
